Zion National Park, October 30, 2012, Part 1

On our trip to California, we wanted very much to see parts of southern Utah and especially Zion National Park.  We drove in from the west off Rt 89 heading south to Rt 9 heading east through the park.

It almost looks like man carved all these lines in the rock!  It was quite amazing.  I am so glad we entered the park this way to see all this.

This is where some of the sandstone has eroded away from the big rock.  It forms kinda an arch.

Look at where a tree will grow, even on top of a rock!  I recommend a geology course which explains all this.

This tree did not make it.  It is a beautiful shot anyway.

I love the variety of patterns we find in here.

Isn't this amazing!  Look at the sculpted scallops in the rock here.

The colors change all the time.

This is another beautiful dead tree.

Ah, a tunnel.  Later we go through a long, downhill tunnel.

This is the beginning of the long tunnel.  They stop you and have it be a one-way travel through the tunnel.  At times they carve out the rock in "window fashion", for light to come in.

This is a view out one of those "windows".

Here is the end of the tunnel.

This shows one of those "windows".
