Early Man site near Barstow, California August 31, 2012

When we were driving on I-15 north of Barstow, California, I noticed this Early Man Site and wanted to check it out.

We drove along a dirt road for several miles to come to this site. We are in the middle of "no-where"!

This was a very small operation.  In their "museum", a one room buiding, they had this artists rendition of "early man", using stone tools.

This shows the Manix Basin of the area where this site is near.

This is the Calico Anceient Man Site.

These are replicas of some of the early tools they found here.

This is a fosselized Camel tooth.  Who knew camels were here?

Jim is standing by one of the signs on the site.
To the right of this marker for the Bentonite Mine is where they found the first subsurface stone tool was found in 1958.

These two shots are of the current digging sites.

This Dee Simpson was a local historical leader who was instrumental in finding the ancient tools here.  She and others went to France to encourage Dr. Leakey to come here to do more digging and research.  They also worked to get a grant from the Smithonian for digging and research. It seems there is controversial evidence here of early man having made tools as early as 200,000 years ago, much earlier than other evidence.

It seems like there are locals who continue to dig here but it is now a small operation.  This is another shot of the "road" we traveled.  Does it look dry and hot?  It was!
