Pioneer Park, Fairbanks, July 22, 2009

After spending time on the stern wheeler, (see privious chapter), we drove to see the Golden Days Celebration at Pioneer Park here in Fairbanks. This is an annual celebration of the first gold discovered near Fairbanks by Pedro Felix, an Italian Immigrant.

Here is one couple dressed in traditional turn of the 20th century clothes. They are eating the free hot dog & chips sponsored by Wal-Mart. We also were in time for the free 'dogs! :-)

This is an imitator of Pedro Felix, the Original Prospector, with his burrow.
This is the jail you could put people in and they would have to have friends post bail, to get out. The proceeds went to charity. We caught them driving down the road in traffic.

They had an old car show also. This is the most unusual truck I have ever seen! Look at it closely-there is even a "still" in the back. It is a model T Ford in running condition.

Isn't this cute! It is a 50 something Willys Jeep Pickup Truck. I always wanted a Jeepster Convertible when I was in high school.

Here is Pedro walking to the bank to change his gold for money. The women are "gold diggers", women who follow the money! :-)

Here he is with his bag of money!

This was a log-splitting contest. Jim says he could have done better than most of the guys competing! I think even I could have done better! :-)

This is a Model A Ford, about 1932-33. Jim really liked this one!

This was used by one of the original airline companies in Alaska. Another Model A. I do not know what year it is.

In the sternwheeler in the park were diaoramas of all the various indian villages near Fairbanks. They were incredibly well done and very detailed.

Here is an original log cabin, moved to the park.

The park also had a carousel, which kids of all ages loved.

This is the Nenana Riverboat, restored for all to see. It was a steam driven riverboat.

This small train ran all over the park. It was a scale model steam engine train.

This sign shows the Indian-Eskimo Olympic Games held here in Fairbanks about the 3rd Weekend of July. We just missed it by one day! It is something I would plan for on any future trips to Alaska!
