More of Big Bend

Here are more scenes of Big Bend and it's mountains and rock formations.

Jim s standing by Luft Canyon.  It is hard to see the perspective from a photo.

These rocks are named "Mule's Ears".

There are not many trees here in Big Bend except in some of the higher elevations.

This is the Homer Wilson Ranch today.  It must have been a hard life here.

This is a unique plant growing in an area which I would call an oasis.  Maybe it is a yucca?

A family settled here for any years probably due to the availability of water.  They have since abandoned it. This is their well windmill remains.

This is the remains of their house.  It is built of adobe blocks.

!
We went to this hot spring near the Rio Grande River.  It is very, very hot...much like Yellowstone

A native family was camped across the river from the spring.  They would come across the river and leave handmade articles which they hoped we would buy.  They left a jar in which to put your money for the purchase.

This is a beach like area near the spring and the Rio Grande.  Someone left their beach towel on the sand.

  1. The unique plant in photo# 12 is an Agave, sometimes called a "century plant" because they're supposed to bloom like this only once every 100 years. Actually they bloom much more often, like between once every 10 to 30 years which is supposed to be once in their lifetime. They grow locally here and I've seen several bloom. Wikipedia says the plant dies after it blooms but I haven't seen that to be true here.
